Body Doubling For ADHD

Focusing is hard

ADHD can be overwhelming

Body doubling can help you be productive

Adulting can be challenging, and for individuals with ADHD and other forms of neurodivergence, it often feels nearly insurmountable. Difficulties with executive function can make it challenging for these individuals to find the motivation to start and complete tasks, even ones they might be interested in. This includes essential but less exciting responsibilities like house cleaning, food preparation, studying, or paying bills, which might go undone, leading to stress and anxiety.

The consequences of executive dysfunction can have profound and lasting impacts. Many neurodivergent individuals feel too embarrassed about their messy living spaces to invite friends and loved ones over. Others struggle to maintain routines for physical and mental well-being, such as exercise, cooking, or journaling. Additionally, some may face difficulties focusing on paid work, resulting in employment instability and financial insecurity. These experiences can accumulate, leading to cycles of shame and self-blame.

Introducing body-doubling, a productivity hack created by and for neurodivergent people. The concept is straightforward: one person stays with another while they tackle a dreaded task. The body doubler doesn’t need to assist with the task; their mere presence provides support. Alternatively, people can be body doubles for each other. Body-doubling makes unpleasant tasks more bearable and may even make them enjoyable.

Beyond productivity, body doubling also combats isolation. As Liz, an ADHD coach, explained, having company makes it easier to get started and complete tasks faster, leading to more productivity. However, the focus isn’t solely on productivity; the progress achieved through body-doubling helps break cycles of procrastination, blame, and shame, ultimately boosting self-esteem.

Body doubling doesn’t require physical presence; “virtual body doubling” is becoming increasingly popular on the internet. People can gather on platforms like Zoom or Discord to co-work, supporting each other and celebrating achievements afterward. Some creators on TikTok even live-stream themselves accomplishing tasks, inviting others to join them.

Body doubling isn’t limited to those with ADHD or neurodivergence; anyone facing challenges with executive functioning and motivation can benefit from it, whether due to depression, anxiety, trauma, or other conditions. If you find it difficult to navigate essential life tasks and reach your goals, body doubling offers a promising approach to try.
